Problem
When the Import dialog opens and before the groups to be imported are displayed, an error occurs:
Error caught at line (unknown) in ImportDataModel.LoadGroups:
Error HRESULT E_FAIL has been returned from a call to a COM
component.
The error occurs for all data connectors.
Resolution
Recent Microsoft updates to Windows 7 and Windows 10 have cause ArcMap to fail when opening an XLS file. Esri have issued an article on their support site: General function failure Unexpected error from external database driver
The Microsoft Updates were:
- Security Update for Microsoft Windows (October 10, 2017 — KB4041681 (Monthly Rollup)
- October 10, 2017 — KB4041676 (OS Build 15063.674)
Unfortunately there is no workaround for Import in Player. It fails when trying to read the DataConnector (XLS file) using the ArcMap libraries.
Player 4.2 SP1 (Build 6501) resolves the issue for Import. Reading XLS is still a problem in ArcMap until Esri/Microsoft resolve the issue.
Additional Information
After installing the Player 4.2 SP1, if you may still get an error:
Error caught at line (unknown) in ImportDataModel.LoadGroups:
Exception from HRESULT: 0x80040213
Or:
Error caught at line (unknown) in ImportDataModel.LoadGroups:
XLSX EXCEL file format is not supported on this machine. Please
contact GIS-pax Support for assistance.
ArcMap 10.3 to 10.6 and Player 5.0 for ArcGIS Pro requires an additional Microsoft library to open Excel XLSX files. More information is available on these Microsoft components. The download is available from the GIS-PAX Helpdesk:
